Video Subbing: KREVA on MUSIC LOVERS (September, 2011)

Here's an episode of Music Lover's featuring Japanese hip hop musician Kreva. After finding huge success with the group Kick The Can Crew in the early 2000's he also created hits as a solo act after breaking up the trio. He's one of my favourite Japanese rappers..well one of the few that I like, as I'm not really a fan of most Japanese hip hop artists (who often unfortunately try to be 'black' too much). Kreva doesn't though, and although he may sound to poppy for purists, his lyrical skills are top class. It also helps that you can usually understand what he says as he doesn't really try to be 'cool' and use lame accents lol. Anyway, he's released a new album called "Go", which means 5, I think to either commemorate 5 years being solo or it being his 5th album. I'm feeling too lazy to check at the moment.....sorry.
He performs a song off the new album called 'Kijun' (The Standard), which is evidently directed at lame or "fake" musicians. I found it really cool and will now look to get his album......

PS. I didn't subtitle the song with the other Kick the Can Crew members in the video as......well I couldn't be bothered. It's hard translating songs, especially hip hop. As I just found out.

Manga Recomendation: Galaxy Express 999

Greetings Earthlings!

I haven't done this in a while....been busy subbing video for a while (well still am but ....meh).
The manga that I'll be writing briefly about today is Galaxy Express 999 (Jap: 銀河鉄道 999. "Ginga Tetsudou 999"). It's a manga classic from the 1970~80's, by Matsumoto Leiji , a legendary artist known for creating many other classic manga such as Captain Herlock and Space Warship Yamato (aka Star Blazers). He also supervised the artwork for some Daft Punk music videos. I can't remember the name but it's the one with blue people playing instruments....lol (check the bottom of the post)

The Galaxy Express 999 is set in a technologically advanced future where space travel has been common place for a very long time, and many humans switch their flesh bodies for "immortal" mechanical bodies. These mechanical bodies last around 7000 years if maintained well but are expensive to create, so only the rich can attain them. The mechanical people now rule the world and there is a strong discrimination against the poor people with perishable natural bodies. Because of this, most poor people wish to also have a mechanical body, but being penniless, there's no way they can even if the save up the meager earnings they may able to get their hands on. So instead they save up for a ticket to ride the Galaxy Express 999 train, which according to legend, takes you to a planet where they give you robot bodies for free. The only problem is that no one has heard of anyone returning from the journey. Even so, many people hold dreams for strong bodies and an everlasting life and decide to gamble on this possibly perilous journey to the other side of the universe.

The main character, Tetsurou Hoshino is one such person. He is a poor boy who witnesses his mother being hunted down and killed by mechanical humans on their way to search for work to save up for tickets for the journey. Before she dies she tells him to continue pursuing their goal, and get his hands on an impenetrable metal body. Intent on getting revenge on the human hunting mechanic people, he (I can't remember how but it was sudden...) meets Maetel, a woman who is the spitting image of his mother. She offers to hand him a pass onto the Galaxy Express if he agrees to be her travel companion.........which is pretty convenient, and suspicious at the same time. He agrees, and after getting revenge they set of on the Space train and travel to many different planets, meeting many different people with many different perspectives to life. It seems that although many 'natural humans' dream of a mechanical body, those with mechanical bodies end up regretting disposing of their warm body and dreams for a cold and senseless metal body.

Soo~~ that's the end of the plot description from me....I don't want to disclose too much. As I said before, they travel to many strange planets with distinct features, for example,

-A planet where people's ears have become so good at hearing that it's against the law to make loud noises.
-A planet where it's customary to paint yourself in gold plating. (lol)
-A planet with an alcoholic tarzan type guy that forces his monkey friends to also drink alcohol.
-A planet wear poor people live inside bubbles inside mud.......
-A planet where a professor has made thousands of clones of himself

It's kind of like Gullivers Travel's or Alice in Wonderland how there are strange worlds, strange people and strange customs, where that 'strangeness' is considered normal. As you'd kind of expect from old manga, the story is very simple and often follows one pattern, but I found it wonderful how these surreal worlds are given life and little histories and characteristics. There are also quite a few funny moments. Well not laugh out loud crying but those little sniff types or short chuckles.

Well I suppose the best way for you to know what I'm talking about is for you to have a read of it, or watch the anime if you get the chance to. If you do get that chance, then I highly recommend that you do :)

MATSUMOTO LEIJI x DAFT PUNK
These are the Daft Punk music video's Matsumoto Leiji worked on.

Oh.....there was more than I expected....like 2~3 more. You can look it up yourself lol
It's basically the ones with blue people.

TRANSLATION NOTES

GOODBYE ANDY WARHOL
The lyrics don't make sense in Japanese or English....so please don't think it's my fault....
I don't understand anything about it either but, I'll just mention a few things.

Blue Gene: is a super computer. However I didn't know if he meant actually meant Blue Gene or Blue Jean. It's impossible to tell in Japanese....

G-String: He's not talking about the uncomfortable looking skimpy underwear here, but the G-String on musical instruments. The lyrics still don't really make sense to me though..

SPRINGTIME OF YOUTH
One of the songs that features in this video is 'Saraba Seishun no Hikari'. In English it means 'Goodbye to the Light of the Springtime of Youth'......it's quite a mouthful in English but that's because there's a word that doesn't exist in English used. The word I'm talking about is 青春 (seishun). It's basically what people in English would refer to as "The Good Old Days".This is a word that describes the time in your life when you were young, full of dreams, experienced many things like love, pain etc etc. It's usually during adolescence but it's not necessarily so.......so I didn't want to use that word...But it's basically the period in your life that you'll look back at when you're older and think......"Those were some fun times".

Video Subbing: (REQUEST) DAY2: HOTEI TOMOYASU WEEK on M-STAGE (1995)

Here's Day 2 of M-Stage's Hotei Tomoyasu Special Week.
Look out for the host's strange outfit. It's like she's wearing a plastic yellow bra over her clothes.

GUITAR CHORDS FOR JAPANESE SONGS

Good Evening everyone,

I'm just sharing some Japanese sites that have guitar chords for Japanese songs. Although you'll need to be able to read Japanese to use them I thought I might as well give out links for people that may want it...

If you want any help with figuring out how to pronounce the lyrics for a particular songs just give me a buzz yo!

There's really only two but they've got a fairly wide range of music, although quite little v-kei types that most people outside Japan seem to be into at the moment. Anyway....

1. Japan Funk Total Music
http://music.j-total.net/a_search/index.html

You'll see 10 drop down things with the first letter of each type of Japanese Hiragana alphabet.
Choose the letter the artist's name starts with. In many cases you'll have to search for the surname of the artist as the Japanese name positions are the opposite of English.

2. Gakki.me
http://gakufu.gakki.me/

This one's more simple to casually search for musicians. Just scroll down a bit and they'll all be in a lists grouped according to the first letter of their name.

Video Subbing: (REQUEST) GACKT on TERRY ITO'S TSUKI NI HOERO

Here's Gackt on Terry Ito's Tsuki ni Hoero (Terry Ito's  Howl at the Moon), as requested by an Anonymous visitor.

He talks about lots of things that you usually don't hear about on other TV shows, so it should be interesting for people that want to know more about his opinions on relationships, marriage and how to be a strong man etc.

TRANSLATION NOTES

HERBIVOROUS, CARNIVOROUS AND DINOSAUR!
Herbivorous men refers to the recent trend of males in Japan that have become metrosexual and feminine.
They (stereotypically) aren't as interested in relationships and sex with females, and like to engage in grooming and have interest in fashion like females. Carnivorous are the opposite, and will openly go after women. The Dinosaur type is something Gackt just made up, and I suppose they devour females.....;p

WALKING 3 STEPS BEHIND
He was talking about how there's a phrase that goes something like "Females walk 3 steps behind men". It kind of made it seem like that's how things work in Japan, but they mostly walk side by side over there too. Only some old people are like that...

He said that guys should walk infront to protect the females....but from what?? Even if there were lots of dangerous flying objects or something while walking around in the streets, wouldn't it be easier to protect them if they were right next to you rather than 3 steps behind your back...?
You can't even see her then....(-_-)....

TRIPITAKA AND SUN WUKONG
This is in reference to the characters from the old Chinese story of 'The Journey To The West'. You might have seen a dubbed Japanese TV series called 'Monkey Magic' that is based on this story.  It's the tale of a Buddhist priest called Tripitaka and three beast people that journey to India to get some holu scriptures. One of the followers is Sun Wukong, the monkey king, who is a powerful but also a sneaky trickster. After getting in trouble in heaven he got trapped under a huge boulder by Buddha, but was rescued by Tripitaka on the condition that he'd protect him on the journey to India. So that Sun Wukong doesn't just leave him and run off, a metal headband/tiara thing that shrinks and tightens when Tripitaka says a prayer is put onto the monkey's head. So this relationship is what Gackt is referring to. Tripitaka needs Sun Wukong to protect him, and Sun Wukong has no choice but to do so until the reaching the end of the journey where is head band thing will be taken off. Even so, they become great friends along the way and Sun Wukong will pretty much risk his life for the priest regardless of the headband torture mechanism.

I highly recommend you watch the dubbed TV series (Monkey Magic) if you haven't already. It's a very funny comedy and made in the 70's with lot's of cheap looking costumes, although that may have been their aim. The English dubbing makes it even more hilarious

Video Subbing: (REQUEST) DAY1: HOTEI TOMOYASU WEEK on M-STAGE (1995)

Well here's the episode from Day 1 of the HOTEI TOMOYASU WEEK special from the show M-STAGE from all the way back in 1995. Thanks for the request and finding such interesting footage Danisha!

It includes clips of his early live performances and promotional videos, where you get to see lots of wacky outfits and strange 80's/ early 90's Japanese trippiness. Oh and be careful not to get a seizure like the kids that watched that banned Pokemon episode, as there's a part where the screen flashes a lot for a pretty long time......

JAPANESE COMEDY SUBS: TUTORIAL - CHIRIN CHIRIN (BIKE BELL)

Hey there! How's life?

I thought I might try out subbing different kinds of videos rather than just ones with musicians or actors for a change. I'm a big fan of Japanese comedy so I'd like start to occasionally sub short conto's (comedy sketches) and manzai clips that I like. Depending on popularity it I may do it more frequently but we'll see how things go.

The first clip I've subtitled is material by the manzai unit 'Tutorial'. It consists of Tokui (the guy on the left) and Fukuda (on the right). ( If you want a short profile of them, visit  Owarai Hive, a blog focused solely on Japanese comedy and join it if you find this interesting). They're one of the most famous comedians in Japan of recent years, and also host the show 'Shabekuri 007' which is another show I've subbed before.

The Japanese Manzai style of comedy is quite simple, and consists of a 'boke' (the fool) and the 'tsukkomi' (Straight man). It's basically consists of the fool doing/saying something stupid and straightman correcting him. There's also usually a lot of head smacking towards the fool so don't be shocked or alarmed about him/her getting abused. It's supposed to be like that lol.

This group doesn't smack each other that much though, so even if you don't like violence you can still watch it ;p

TRANSLATION NOTES

CICADA CHORUS
This is mainly for people who might be studying Japanese and are interested in random Japanese words that don't exist in English. In the video there was a phrase "It was a really hot summer...As the cicadas loudly chorused.....blah". What I translated as cicada's chorusing was 'Semi Shigure' 蝉時雨. 'Semi' 蝉= Cicada, whereas 'Shigure' 時雨 is a light drizzle of rain that is common in Autumn and Winter. 'Semi Shigure' is combined to create a word to describe a continuous and loud kind crying noise of cicadas in the background. I suppose people thought it resembled the noise of the light drizzles.

YAMAZAKI MASAYOSHI
There was a part where Tokui says that he searched "The back streets of town, the instersections and even the train station platforms. Even though there's no way it would be there". As Fukuda pointed out, it copied the lyrics from a famous song by Yamazaki Masayoshi called 'One more time, One more chance'. There's an english subbed version on youtube (courtesy of domolela) so I posted it here. There's a heavy metal song at the start for a bit but don't worry, it's nothing like that. It was also a song used in the anime film 'Byousoku 5cm' (5cm per second) by Makoto Shinkai.

LEGS BECAME STICKS
There's a way of saying that you used your legs a lot that they'd become stiff as sticks in Japanese.........Oh wait they also do in English....I just said it.

JAPANESE FOLKLORE: MONSTER CATS!! 化け猫 (BAKENEKO)

やぁ、諸君!

Welcome to J-Burogu, the random Japanese stuff blog.
I thought I'd start talking about various Japanese Folklore from time to time, when I feel like doing so and have nothing else to do ;p.

So anyway, this post is going to be about Bakeneko (化け猫), which according to wikipedia is 'Monster Cat'. However, 化ける (Bakeru) actually means to shape-shift, so it might be more accurate as 'Shape -shifting Cats'. There are many stories about Bakeneko in Japanese folklore, and they can be both good and bad. The bad ones either end up killing their owners and others, or shape-shifting as your friends/family for......well I don't know their reason for that but they do. Maybe they just like mischief and find it fun messing with arrogant humans?

According to legend, cat's can turn into 'Monster Cats' in a number of ways.
1.They live for a hundred years (somehow)
2. Reach a weight of 3.75kg
3. Or is allowed to keep a long tail (Japanese people made a breed of cat's with bobtails (Link)

You can't underestimate this furry pets either, as they're pretty damn dangerous. They've got the ability to curse people, control dead bodies, possess living people They can also grow to be giants. However, they also have good abilities like talking to humans and walking around on their hind legs, which allows them to dance around and in some cases, do sumo wrestling lol. Oh, they can also fly.

Anyway, if you're interested in these furry creatures, I'll let you do more research on your own.
I'll leave you with some old Japanese 'Ukiyoe' (Block prints) of them though. I've only posted pictures of  funny/cutish looking ones, but other ones of evil cats exist too if you look for it.

Picking up the girlfriend?

Doing what cats do.

Meal time and drinking sake

Playing the 'Shamisen'

.......Celebrity cats? Maybe

Cats playing with balls

There's cats all over the place here. The huge one in the back, on in the lantern,
those two small ones dancing, and the person in the middle with white hair and ears.

I've found that they actually do exist in real life, and are in fact around us even today. I'll give you some evidence that I've found!!

These surely HAVE to be Bakeneko......

Lastly Bakeneko in Anime.........

From Bakemonogatari. I forgot her name though...

Video Subbing: Imai Miki on Jounetsu Tairiku

Here's the episode of Jounetsu Tairiku with the famous singer/actress Imai Miki. She is married to Hotei Tomoyasu, who was in the previous episode that I translated. He has a much larger role in this one than Miki did in Hotei's video as he appears quite a bit in the last half.

This video made me respect the two even further, and you can tell that they trust each other strongly and are very happy to have each other. Enjoy!

GET FROM MEDIAFIRE [91 MB]

I really want an album or some collection of her singing with the piano now.....I really like music like that and she did it very nicely in the video.

TRANSLATION NOTES

YUMIN
They were saying how Miki admired the music of 'Yumin' during her teens. Yumin is the nickname for Matsutoya Yumi (also known as Arai Yumi early on in her career). She's an extremely influential singer, composer, lyricist etc etc, and is one of the most respected people in Japanese music. Her song called 'Haru yo Koi' (Come Spring), is (or was) taught in school textbooks for the Japanese language. She's got a distinct voice that might take a little while to get used to but her composing skills are excellent. Although most of her music is 80's style (which I personally don't like...) if you get the time you might want to check her out. I'll just leave a couple of songs here though.

Haru Yo, Koi  春よ、来い
Eng: Come, Spring

Yasashisa ni Tsutsumaretara やさしさに包まれたなら
Eng: If  You're Surrounded By Kindness

You may have recognised it as the ending for Kiki's Delivery Service. Well I don't know if it's the same for the dubbed version but this is it for the Japanese one. She also has done the song that plays on the portable radio as Kiki is searching for a town to live in. That one's called "Rouge no Dengon" (A Rouge Message).

Video Subbing: (REQUEST) HOTEI TOMOYASU on JOUNETSU TAIRIKU

Here's the English subtitled version of Hotei Tomoyasu on the show Jounetsu Tairiku 情熱大陸 (means Passion Continent). It's a popular series of 25 minute documentaries that follow all sorts of people, famous and not famous, who strive for some goal or do there work with great passion.

I found this a really interesting video, as you get to see a few photo's from his childhood and how he does his work in the studio among many other things. Anyway here it is.

GET FROM MEDIAFIRE [92 MB]

TRANSLATION NOTES
HOTEI'S PAST PROJECTS
Hotei has worked in two different groups apart from his solo career. Both of them have reached legendary status in Japan, and both broke up at the height of it's popularity, for whatever reasons. I'll just briefly explain each one.

Boowy: This band consisted of Himuro Kyosuke (aka Himurock) on vocals, Hotei on guitar, Matsui Tsunematsu on base and Takahashi Makoto on drums. The name of the band is a play on the word Boui 暴威 (tyranny), as well as David 'Bowie', who was a great influence to Himurock and Hotei. They created a huge 'band boom' in Japan, and caused the highest sale of musical intruments in Japan ever. They were only together for 5 years but scored many hits, the most famous song be Marionette.

COMPLEX: This is a two man unit that Hotei created with the singer Kikkawa Koji. They only worked together for two years before having a falling out, but were already considered as legendary after the release of their two albums. They first created a huge stir with their charisma and uniqueness in the Japanese music industry with their video for "Be My Baby", which is just the two dancing about in front of a clean white screen. It was also unusual, as Kikkawa Koji was already an established idol singer at this time, and his teaming up with a Rock star was questioned. They were a good match though, and Kikkawa evolved from a Johnny entertainment type idol to a Rock Star after this.

Another one of my favourites is the song "Rambling Man". I heard the riff off Hotei's guitar medley on his 30th Anniversary Special episode of Music Lovers and was searching all over for it. I was really happy when I found it!

LORD EBISU
Lord Ebisu, or Yebisu is one of the Seven Gods of Fortune. He is said to be the god of luck, fishermen, workingmen as well as a protector of small children. Although many of the other seven gods are transmitted from China, Ebisu is the only one original to Japan. It's also the name of a beer company, and his image is used as their logo.

Interestingly, another one of the seven gods is called Hotei. He's the fat one holding a sack, and is usually the one that people in the West often imagine buddha as being......

Can't see much of a resemblance.

NEW TOKYO JIHEN SINGLE PV: HANDSOME SUGITE (ハンサム過ぎて)

The PV (Promotional video) for a new Tokyo Jihen single has been released, called "Handsome Sugite", which means 'Too Handsome'. I believe the song is referring to me :).

This song does not feature in their recent album Daihakken (Link), which was only released at the end of June this year. It's supposed to go on sale on the 21st of September 2011.

Well here ya go!

This is the CD cover for the single.

Video Subbing: (REQUEST) SHABEKURI 007 feat IMALU and Bump.y (07.03.2011)

オスッ!Welcome to J-Burogu

I've finally finished subtitling an episode of Shabekuri 007 that was requested. The first half of this episode features IMALU, the daughter of comedian Akashiya Sanma and actress Ootake Shinobu, who are two top stars of Japanese show business. The second half features an up and coming idol group called 'bump.y'.

TRANSLATION NOTES

AKASHIYA SANMA
Akashiya Sanma is perhaps the most famous and popular comedian of Japan. He's one of the 'Big 3' of comedians, which also include Beat 'Kitano' Takeshi, and Tamori. He hosts numerous shows, such as 'Sanma Palace (Sanma Gotenさんま御殿) and is known as the 'Comedy Monster' (Owarai Kaijuu お笑い怪獣) due to how good he is at his profession. He's also famous for his distinct laugh........which I would describe as a high pitch gasp....

OOTAKE SHINOBU
Ootake Shinobu is a very famous and acclaimed actress. She married Akashiya Sanma in 1988 and had their daughter, Imalu, who was put into her custody after a divorce in 1992.

Right: Nowadays          Left:  In the 80's

DORAEMON RETURNS
Doraemon is a very famous children cartoon show about a robotic cat who travels from the future to help a cowardly child called Nobita become stronger. He does this with the aid of various hi-tech gadgets brought back from his own time period. Many movie adaptations have been made of this series, which have all been successful and popular. One movie that is particularly known for making people cry, is 'Doraemon Returns'. In this movie Doraemon decides to return to the future and leave Nobita after all the hardships and episodes they had gone through.....anyway there's a very emotional ending which left many people in tears.

SETO AND KEITANI MIREI
When they were talking about the movie Imalu starred in called 'Runway Beat', they mentioned two other people that acted in it. One was 'Seto', from the 'D-Boys'. This is Seto Koji and D-Boy's is a moderately popular boy group that he's in along with three other dudes. A number of them, including Seto once had roles as Kamen Riders in the past.

Not Seto Kaiba but Seto Koji. They have the same initials and surname though...

The other person was 'Keitani Mirei'. The persons actual name is 'KIRITANI Mirei', and either IMALU said it wrong or I'm just hearing it wrong. I don't know. I sounds like she's saying Keitani to me. (-_-)

IMALU'S TOP 3 COMEDIANS
She mentioned three of her favourite comedians.

FUJIWARA'S HARANISHI: Is a guy from the manzai unit FUJIWARA, with Fujimoto Toshifumi Their group name is actually a combination of the first half of their surnames, Haranishi and Fujimoto.
***('H' can turn into a 'W' when something is put in front of it in Japanese. Iit can also turn into a 'B')

PEACE's AYABE: Is Ayabe Yuuji from manzai group Peace/Piece ( I don't know which one). He's famous for being fairly handsome and having a fetish for mature ladies.

OGIYAHAGI: Ogiyahagi is another manzai group. They didn't specify which of the two she liked but it's members include Ogi Hiroaki and Yahagi Ken.

Far left is Haranishi        Middle:Ayabe      Right:The two from Ogiyahagi

PIGEON BREASTS AND CAT BACKS
I believe Pigeon Breasts are called the same thing in English (or Pigeon Chest). This is the description given to people with protruding sternum and ribs.

Cat backs (Nekoze 猫背) in English are what you would call hunchbacks or rounded shoulders. I don't know why I didn't subtitle it like that in the video.....I didn't notice that people wouldn't understand 'cat backs' for some reason at the time...

Left: Pigeon Chest ,  Right:Cat Back

FLOWER MANOR
The Flower Manor is an amusement park in Asakusa, Tokyo. In Japanese, it's the 'Hana Yashiki', and has been operating since 1853.
Back in the Past

Nowadays

NEPTUNE'S DEBUT SINGLE
They talked about Neptune's debut single. They actually had a fair bit of success with music fairly early on in their career. This particular one is called "Kimi wo sagashite" (To Find You).
Here's a link to it on youtube
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gVnU3GCPbYk

IKKO
Arita said that Nagura looked like IKKO on that cd sleeve. IKKO is a homosexual and cross dressing tv personality.

Here's IKKO and the single jacket...

THE COBRA TWIST
One of Neptunes' random (and not funny) jokes were, "The Cobra Twist of a person who doesn't know the Cobra Twist". The Cobra Twist is a wrestling move, and was also a special favourite of Antonio Inoki, one of Japan's most popular pro-wrestlers.

Example of a Cobra Twist:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mdaixqJnjSo

BUMP.Y'S SENIORS
They mentioned some past occupants of the place where Bump.y live, which included.

Uchiyama Rina

Horikita Maki

Kuroki Meisa

Kiritani Mirei
(same person as mentioned before who starred in movie with Imalu!)

MIYAZAKI FESTIVAL
Miyazaki is a prefecture in the southern state of Kyushu. It's a rural area famous for it's mangoes, chickens and pork. Ueda says that there'd be nice Chicken Nanban at a Miyazaki Festival. Chicken Nanban is a Japanese dish from Kyushu, which consists of fried chicken flavoured with tartar sauce. It's also where my grandparent's and dad are from!

HASHIDA SUGAKO
Is a veteran Japanese actress.

HAYASHI RICE
Is a dish similar to Japanese curry. It is a Western style Japanese dish, although it doesn't exist in the West. The closest thing is beef stew, as it has the same kind of ingredients such as beef, onion, mushrooms etc. It's flavoured with demi-glace sauce. Red wine and/or tomato sauce is also often added.
